Yungba Yungba and the Dance Contest offers rich opportunities for creative interpretation, given its timeless story that speaks directly to contemporary Nigerian society. An eclectic approach is adopted from four main perspectives. First is the feminist angle, highlighting the role of women in political emancipation and social transformation. Second, is the Brechtian approach that encourages critical reflection, rather than emotional immersion. The third, Agitation Propaganda, is to provoke activism and motivate people toward social, political or ideological action. The last is the incorporation of the Multimedia by making its political themes relevant to contemporary audiences while preserving its cultural and ritual elements. These fusion of ideas make the stage a communal space where movement, rhythm, and ensemble work symbolize unity, strength of ordinary people against oppression, and the desire for freedom and accountability from political office holders.

Today's performance is unlike any other. It is a special occasion to celebrate this legendary icon who has given so much back to the society as he turns 80 on June 16, 2026. As so many of his contemporaries, family friends and mentees erupt in volcanic celebrations across the globe, we over here, add our beats to the communal drumming. Oh, and our dance steps too! Certainly, the choice of Yungba Yungba... is not accidental. So, join us on the voyage of this play that brilliantly combines entertainment with a profound social and political message. It is our hope that this production will not only entertain but also inspire reflection on the responsibilities of leadership and the power of citizens to shape their own future.
